Description
The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that each year, approximately 2.93 million workers worldwide lose their lives due to work-related incidents, with 395 million cases of non-fatal injuries and 2.41 million workers exposed to excessive heat. Despite substantial progress in workplace safety, significant challenges remain. To address these concerns, ISO developed the ISO 45001 standard, which establishes requirements for an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&S MS) to promote safer work environments.
What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001, based on OHSAS 18001 and other international safety guidelines, defines the requirements for an OH&S MS. Implementing this standard helps organizations create safer, healthier workplaces. Applicable across all industries, ISO 45001 aims to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities while supporting the continuous improvement of occupational health and safety.
Sharing a High-Level Structure (HLS) with standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, ISO 45001 facilitates the integration of multiple management systems. Since its 2018 release, it has replaced the British OHSAS 18001 standard.
Why is an OH&S MS Important?
Given the high rates of workplace accidents and fatalities, ensuring the safety and health of employees is essential. Organizations must prioritize effective health and safety practices to reduce workplace hazards and minimize risks. Attending PECB’s ISO 45001 training courses, such as Foundation, Lead Auditor, or Lead Implementer, allows individuals to develop expertise in globally recognized safety practices, equipping them to implement or audit safety protocols that reduce work-related incidents.
Why Establish OH&S Guidelines and Procedures?
Poor OH&S practices lead to emotional, human, and financial costs. Therefore, organizations should adopt a systematic OH&S approach. Setting up health and safety procedures helps organizations to:
- Prevent workplace illnesses and injuries: OH&S guidelines protect workers from hazards, contributing to the reduction of work-related illnesses and injuries.
- Minimize health and safety risks: Well-defined procedures reduce hazards associated with workplace equipment and processes.
- Avoid unwanted consequences: Clear guidelines empower workers to avoid risks, reducing potential health and safety incidents.
Benefits of ISO 45001 for Organizations
Implementing an OH&S MS based on ISO 45001 can greatly benefit organizations by:
- Enhancing reputation through globally recognized safety standards
- Increasing employee trust by prioritizing their health and safety
- Reducing insurance premiums and claims
- Boosting return on investment through improved productivity and fewer injuries
- Lowering turnover rates by focusing on employee well-being
